Veteran Jay (Scott Baxter) returns from the battlefield to his rundown
home to celebrate his homecoming with his sister (Jamie Bernadette) and
best friends (James Hutchinson, Christopher Thorpe, Charmane Star, Bryan
Howard) - but the party soon takes a turn to the worse when Jay's ex Jenny
(Janet Roth) turns up, and tries to get back together with him. It almost
works, too, but then she turns into a demon (or maybe zombie) and starts
killing Jay's friends - who then also return as demons and can only
stopped by a shot in the head. Somehow, Jay can get his sister to safety,
then he makes a run for it ... and runs into his Sarge (Chad Bishop) from
the army at the next (demon-infested) gas station, who helps him out of a
tight spot and then explains what has been happening: It seems they have
been tested on with some vaccine while in service that makes them immune
to some weaponized virus - unfortunately, it also makes them carriers,
which of course handily explains the demon-outbreak of late. Now Sarge
knows who can save them (and humankind as such), a certain Dr Clark, but
has no idea how to reach him and is convinced the gouvernment is after
them to avoid a mass panic. Lacking a better explanation, Jay follows his
old warbuddy - and only by the by, he figures that Sarge might have gone
off the rocker a bit, as he starts killing people left and right, and his
explanations become more and more vague and unconvincing. So in a
nutshell, Jay begins to doubt whether he's on the right track - but that
said, nothing could have compared him to what's actually and really going
on ... So ok, for the most part, Face of Evil plays like
your typical zombie-outbreak movie with a little bit of conspiracy theory
and lots of action thrown in, and while it's not the reinvention of the
wheel, it does very fine at doing so, placing all the suspense, shocks,
and even a little bit of humour, just right, plus the cast is uniformly up
to carrying the movie - but what really makes this movie and sets it apart
from the competition is its finale that for sure nobody saw coming and
that leaves one dumbfounded and makes perfect sense even if it
(intentionally) leaves many questions unanswered. Quite a watch, really!
