2021 was certainly a year that had more than its fair share of high and
low points, and of course Trump supporters storming the Capitol in
Washington, DC immediately comes to mind, but also the mass production and
distribution of Corona vaccines, and in its shadow the rise of
hair-raisingly silly conspiracy theories, only fanned by anti science TV
hosts like Tucker Carlson, that led to a movement of anti-vaxxers and even
anti maskers. And on a lighter note, there were also billionairs playing
astronauts with real rockets ... Actual footage from 2021 is commented
(among others) by Hugh Grant as an arrogant conservative historian,
Cristin Milioti as a conspiracy theory loving soccer mum under house
arrest, Tracey Ullman as ersatz Tucker Carlson, tellingly hosting a show
called Just Asking Questions, Stockard Channing as a hard-drinking
Washington correspondent, with narration by Laurence Fishburne. Now
if you have at all lived through 2021 and have done a decent job following
the news, you'll find a lot to laugh about in this mockumentary, as it
gets many things right, especially the year's more bizarre incidents. But
of course, as with all topical humour, it's best to watch around New Year
2022, as much of the comedy and satire is likely to fade over time - and
at the same time this might be a nice time capsule 50 years or so from
now, not for its actual humour but curiosity value.
