20 years ago, Aj (Keli Price) has witnessed his parents die on Wolf
Mountain - but has no memory of it at all. However, the event comes up in
his nightmares of late, so frequently actually that he seeks help from
psychiatrist Dr. Avery (Tobin Bell) - who fails to help Aj to a
breakthrough, so he suggests for Aj to visit Wolf Mountain in hopes for
the encounter to finally trigger some memories. Aj doesn't go alone
though, he brings with him his wife Samantha (Karissa Lee Staples), his
brother Max (David Lipper), Max's wife Lexi (Fernanda Romero), Lexi's
sister Emma (Malu Trevejo) and her boyfriend James (Matt Rife) - after
all, there is such a thing as safety in numbers. But he first night their
safety isn't much of a concern - sure they happen across bankrobbers Eddie
(Danny Trejo) and Joe (Kenny Yates) eager to bury their loot, but they try
their best to stay out of our heroes' hair. Thing is, the next morning Aj
and Samantha find all their friends gone, later find their corpses by the
by, run into Joe who accuses them of having killed his partner before
being killed himself, and find themselves on the run from a masked man
who's pretty handy at axe throwing and with a crossbow ... Now
granted, I'm not the biggest fan of slasher movies, but Curse of Wolf
Mountain has certain elements to break up the mold quite a bit
inasmuch as it gives its lead characters legitimate motivation to be where
they are and do what they're doing, motivation that ties right back into
the key mystery of the film - which is ultimately resolved in a very
unexpected way. And despite having all the suspense, all the jump scares,
and all the violence in all the right spots, the film manages to keep the
audience guessing throughout. And a genre-savvy directorial effort and a
relatable cast playing relatable characters help to bring this one to life
rather beautifully, making it a very cool genre ride.
