College student Ronnie (Jennifer Cipolla) is the leader of a coven of
witches tasked with bringing back superwitch Ashura - but unfortunately
Ronnie has also a bit of a temper, so during one of the rituals to achieve
that she kills fellow witch Christy (Sara Stretton), and now they're one
witch short to finish all the rituals. So Ronnie sends out Beth (Margot
Major) to find another witch on the campus, and she's quick to track down
Sophie (Lizze Gordon), a history student very much aligned with the
supernatural who tries to bring her mother (Jill Deluca) back from the
dead with the help of occultist Emily (Sofya Skya). Now Sophie immediately
doesn't trust Ronnie, but since her attempts to bring back her mother with
the help of Emily haven't produced any results, she falls for the lure of
Ashura. But when during a ritual, Ronnie kills yet another witch (Jessica
Louise Long), both Sophie and Beth come to the realisation that she's a
psycho and make a hasty escape - only to then come to the conclusion they
have to face Ronnie to get rid of her. And fortunately, Sophie's history
teacher (Terri Ivens) has only very recently uncovered just the book of
spells they need for this. However, Ronnie and her second-in-command Jax
(Miranda O'Hare) have taken Sophie's boyfriend (Adam Horner) hostage to
even the odds, so now truly everything's at stake, and the longer this
goes on, the stronger Ashura will grow in Ronnie's body ...
Now Coven is by no means a reinvention of anything, and
with its rather light-footed approach to hex-horror and focus on young and
sexy witches, it's actually more than a little reminiscent of TV's Charmed
- and I don't mean that at all in a bad way. And basically what this movie
might lack in originality, it makes up for in stringent storytelling with
an emphasis on keeping things moving and entertaining the audience. And a
slick directorial effort goes perfectly in line with that approach, while
the cast all play it straight but (in a good way) don't seem to take
things too seriously, to help make this a pretty fun movie to watch.
