A bunch of roller derby girls (Ana Maria Udroiu, Leela Thompson, Steph
Mossman, Makenna Guyler, Rebecca Rowan, Ilona Bendziute, Gemma Knight,
Deneika Hamilton, Faye Ormston) go on a camping trips deep in the woods,
and are captured by a family of clowns (Pete Bennett, Daniella D'Ville,
Roxy Bordeaux, Warren Speed), who are really into torturing and killing
people in mostly circus-style ways - mainly though because they're afraid
to be themselves found out by the two brothers (Colin Freakshow Fletcher,
Rod Glenn) of their mother (Kerry Bavin), who are in turn after them
because their dad Rupert (Chris M.T. Harrison) killed her in a fit of
rage. And it was also their dad, a clown out of passion and a violent man
to boot, who has turned them all into backwoods killer clowns. He has
spent the last few years in prison, while his brother (Steve Haze) has
turned Rupert's considerable fortune over to the kids so they can go into
hiding in the first place. But now dad has been released, and he wants his
money back - and if everyone thought there were troubles so far, now it
really gets ugly ... So ok, a film with the premise
"roller derby girls vs. backwood clowns" might sound a little
bit like a joke - and Coulrophobia is indeed lots of fun, because
the movie doesn't take itself that seriously at all and seems to know
about the outlandishness of its story and really milks it, blending a
basic survival horror story with bizarre circus-like imagery, explicit
gore scenes with dark jokes, and basically horror with humour - and it
works, there's not a minute in the movie that can be described as boring.
That said, Coulrophobia is definitely not a movie for everyone, a
strong stomach certainly helps in enjoying this - but it's also tons of
fun!!!
