Best friends Judy (Todd Flaherty) and Chrissy (Wyatt Fenner) have risen
to modest fame in New York as a duo of drag performers - but then Chrissy
moves to Philadelphia to be with his boyfriend Shawn (Kiyon Spencer),
leaving Judy to fend for himself - and Judy soon comes to the realisation
that without Chrissy the show isn't the same anymore. And that it's summer
and even the usually bustling New York scene is almost dead doesn't help.
But instead of working to improve himself, self-centered Judy blames
everything on everyone else, which leads him to making one mistake after
the next, including having sex with the boyfriend (Joey Taranto) of a
friend (James Tison) who has just secured him a gig, getting into a fight
with Chrissy, insulting Shawn, and alienating most of his friends. It's
only when he out of necessity accepts a job as houseboy at a gay bed and
breakfast for the summer that he begins to see light ... Now of
course, it doesn't hurt to enjoy drag performances when watching this film
- but at the same time it's not an absolute necessity as the film is not
so much about the showbusiness side of its story as it's about finding
oneself, and based on that the road to reinvention. And a very empathetic
script with rounded out characters rather than gay stereotypes achieves
just that, helped by a directorial effort stubtle enough despite its camp
subject matter, and by a strong ensemble cast - and the outcome is
actually a pretty awesome watch.
