Headmaster Wakefield (Ted Ray) is planning to leave Maudlin Street
School, and it all hinges on the review of school inspectors Grigg (Leslie
Phillips) and Wheeler (Rosalind Knight), proponents of a very lenient
style of education. And thus, Wakefield forbids all caning. Somehow one of
the students, Robin (Richard O'Sullivan) gets wind of this, and thus
conspires with a bunch of other students to play pranks on their teachers
pretty much every stop along the way, culminating in a totally botched up
production of Romeo and Juliet. With Grigg and Wheeler being
lenient as they are, it takes a lot to dissuade them from giving Wakefield
good marks, but ultimately it becomes unavoidable. Wakefield of course it
heartbroken, and he decides to severely punish all the ringleaders among
the pranksters - but before they can get their caning it transpires that
they did all of this only because they didn't want to lose Wakefield as
their headmaster ... The main thing you need to know about this
one is that it's a Carry On film, so don't expect complex
characters, clever storylines, or really much in terms of sophistication
at all. That said, if you're into the series' style of humour that blends
slapstick and character comedy, with a little wordplay and bits of
harmless naughtiness thrown in, and just like to see whom the series
regulars play this time around (dead giveaway in the title, they all play
teachers), then chances are high you'll like this entry, and of coursea
nostalgic state of mind also helps enjoying this one.
