A zombie outbreak has shattered the country, maybe the world, and
General Vasquez (Robert Lasardo) holds one of the few areas not yet
overrun by the undead as a river separates it from the epicenter. But of
late more and more reports have shown that the zombies are approaching the
last bridge to that strip of land, and Colonel Charon (Michael Paré) of
the civil guard has so far been unable to summon up the promised
re-inforcements. So the General sends a platoon to secure the bridge,
which cannot be lost at any rate as it's pretty much the leap-off point
for the army to win back the country. But that platoon runs into all kinds
of trouble, from a refugee camp on the other side of the bridge led by Big
Jim Gill (William 'Bill' Connor) refusing to retreat to safer grounds to
losing all their supplies to heavy losses including the platoon's
commander to leave relatively inexperienced Private Hernandez (Kate
Watson) of the operation. And all the while the zombies are approaching,
and if that's not enough there's a creature (Lance Brazil) living under
the bridge even more dangerous than a bunch of the undead ... Genre fave
Sarah French plays a girl in the refugee camp the soldiers save from an
attempted rape, which curiously enough immediately gets them at odds with
the people of the camp. One might not immediately be attracted
by this movie's focus on the army and army operations of this movie, and I
know I wasn't at first, but that's really doing the film injustice as this
isn't just an over-long recruitment clip ŕ la Top
Gun but much more of a character piece on how desparate situations
bring the best out in some, the worst in others, within and without
military ranks. And that the whole thing's nicely filmed and finds just
the right balance between action and suspense needed for the story, and
features a solid ensemble that grounds the thing makes this just a very
cool piece of genre cinema.
