South Hampton, 1933: It's the tail end of the prohibition that has long
lost its original effect and these days only makes gangsters and corrupt
cops rich. Malone (Michael McFadden) and Sam (Dan McGlaughlin) are two
cops on the take, and they're always on the lookout for new speakeasys to
shake down - and of late, Malone has taken quite an interest in Victor
Renfield's (Peter Patrikios) club, especially since he suspects it's
actually run by black bandleader Chesterfield (Ice-T) - which is entirely
true of course, as the two cops find out when they demand protection money
... and Chesterfield is just too eager to pay up. So they, along with two
colleagues, decide to stop one of their booze-running trucks for some
extra cash - and somehow that leads to a shoot-out when one of the cops
gets nervous enough and pulls the trigger, but ultimately, they manage to
kill all the boozerunners. Problem is, they refuse to stay dead and prove
to be impervious to bullets. And before you know it, they have killed all
the cops safe Malone. And he has to come to the conclusion that the
boozerunners ... are actually vampires, using alcohol smuggling to cover
up their bloodsmuggling business. But while Malone is still trying to
figure out a plan to fight the vampires, they have already erradicated
most of the local police force, and now all he has on his side are a
lovesick young man (Chris James Boylan) whose girlfriend (Airen DeLaMater)
the vampires have taken, and an old and brain-addled bible thumper (Jack
Hoffman), who just happens to know more about vampires than anyone else
... Bloodrunners is actually a very enjoyable period
piece that successfully manages to blend the vampire genre with a
prohibition-time gangster story and that somehow really gets it right as
some care has been taken not only in getting the props, location and
wardrobe right but also in telling a story that fits the period without
any post-modern mockery, and in a directorial approach that avoids bland
spectacle and seems almost old-fashioned in the best possible way. And add
to that actors that not only get their parts right but also look their
parts, and you've got a fun genre blend. Oh, and if this has
