It was to be nothing but a party (including all the alcohol and
semi-legit drugs involved) in an abandoned building - a party with all the
right permits even. And yet, one of the guests goes missing, and the
organizers (Caroline
Boulton, Gergo Szekér, Takács Zalán, Tom Nguyen, Sherin Bors), when
going looking for her, discover there's a whole system of tunnles under
the building they're at - and of course, they do get lost in these
maze-like tunnles, too. Problem is, there's a killer afoot on the
premises, a woman with a doll face mask who might or might not be a demon
- but whatever she is, she's all deadly, and she knows the place better
than any of our heroes ... Now I won't lie to you, The
Basement does not exactly re-invent the horror genre - but it plays
what might be a familiar tune to perfection, truly excelling in creating
suspense, placing jump scares and the like, and it's one of those rare
movies that knows how to set up "found footage" scenes - and
when to omit the tactics in favour of proper storytelling. In all, a
really good ride for sure!
