Tom Sizemore wakes up in rehab, in the office of one Dr. Janice (Janice
Dickinson), but instead of taking her counsel and working with her, he
insists he has just come out of rehab, Barbee-rehab, where collectors
addicted to Barbee dolls meet those who live in the delusion of being
Barbee dolls (or Kens or Skippers), and meet those who are just generally
crazy, with a whatever loose connection to Barbee dolls. According to Tom,
the institute is run by one Dr. Midge (Vanessa Bednar), who really might
be a loonie running the bin, as she seems to have created a close to
perfect enviroment for her Barbees - and probably even more so for her
Kens, who are vastly outnumbered by Barbees and thus never short of sexual
partners, however their other shortcomings might be. The institute is
policed by Cop Ken (Derek S. Orr), who's as by-the-book as he's
ineffective - and with all this playing out at the same time, it's no
wonder that Tom needs therapy, no matter whether the story about the
Barbee rehab is just a figment of his imagination or not ... Now
this first episode of Barbee Rehab, it's safe to say, will
not win many awards for elegant storytelling, as it's really just a series
of vignettes based on the same premise with only a very loose narrative
connection, in very random chronological order. But that said, the
episode's also dead funny, and that's starting with having Tom Sizemore,
himself no stranger to rehab, as its narrative anchor - and bringing quite
some amount of (self-)irony to it too -, to hitting all the right notes
with its overriding Barbie doll theme, to creating some instantly
amusing characters. So ok, at least this episode might come along as
basically a sketch show rather than narrative comedy, but I dare you not
to laugh out loud at least several times.
