After a team of scientists have claimed to have found the fabulous Yeti
plant somewhere in the Himalayas, but failed to bring it back to
civilisation, Dr. Helen (Amy Gordon) and her team - Sarah (Katrina
Mattson), computer expert Pete (Justin Prince Moy) and gunmen Bob (Robert
Berlin) and Victor (Brandon Grimes) - set out to retrieve the plant. You
see, the Yeti plant is pretty much said to be a cure-all for every disease
and whatnot that mankind has encountered - and Dr. Helen is suffering from
brain cancer, so for her the stakes are personal. However the search for
the Yeti plant isn't an easy one, as the area's uncharted, and to even set
up beacons for orientation is a big risk in the snowy surroundings. Plus,
while Dr. Helen sure has selfish reasons that drive her, she wants to
retrieve the plant for the good of humankind - but not everybody on her
team is that benign in their motives. Plus, there's another, even realer
threat, as the Yeti plant is guarded by, you guessed it, the Yeti (Timothy
Shultz), and he's not very pleased about the increased interest his plant
is getting these days, and usually reacts with tearing those who cross his
path apart. And what makes this worse, he's not only super strong but also
really good at sneaking up on people and bullets don't faze him much. So
before long, the quest to heal all mankind has become a game of life and
death ... So ok, abominable doesn't score terribly high on the
originality scale, it's basically a wintery monster slasher, with some
shades of The Thing but not nearly
its impact. But what Abominable does it does well, it does manage
to create a feeling of threat throughout, the scenes of action, violence
and suspense are all well executed, the creature looks properly mean, and
the snowy scenery is put to good use. All of this of course results in
good genre fun.
