Malvolia, Queen of the Screams (Jennifer Nangle) presents us with a
quintet of horror stories (and a few faux trailers thrown in, just for
good measure:
- A Samhain Liturgy: Holly (Rhema Srihartiti) is to babysit
little Tommy (Devin Douglas) on Halloween - which goes quite well
until she and her boyfriend (Ty Sells) find out the boy secretly keeps
a carnivorous creature (Tim Novotny) in the basement, a creature he's
willing to defend with claws and teeth - and quite a few weapons, too
...
- Dead Lift: It's one final passenger for cabbie Jeremy (Tim
Robinson) on Halloween night - and it happens to be a corny
horror performer, Howard (William McCarthy). But however hammy he
might come across, there's something very creepy about him ...
- Apache Hatchet Massacre: A creepy campfire story turns all
too real ...
- Overkill: What would Halloween be without your friendly
neighbourhood machete-wielding psychokiller roaming town. But not all
killers wear masks ...
- Sister Mary: There'r more than one side to Sister Mary
(London Grace), devout nun by day, mankilling seductress by night.
However, what fate has in store for her hits both her sides equally
hard ...
Now 10/31 Part 2 might have never set out to actually re-invent
the genre, but it's sure to strike a chord with horror fans nevertheless
because the individual segments (including the trailers) all play with
different genre tropes and mainstays, sometimes giving genre conventions a
new twist, some in a more serious way, others going for laughs, but
without ever becoming just moronic. Plus, all segments end on punchlines
reminiscent in the best meaning of the word old-fashioned short stories
and are carried in equal parts by atmosphere, acting and storytelling,
making this one really nice genre trip, pretty much perfect for a night in
on Halloween.
