Odyn (Gregg Golding) and Trey (Eljen Laverdure) are best friends who
have dreams of one day becoming superstar rappers but presently work as
(ineffective) low level security guards. Odyn is having a bit of an
internet obsession, and he's probably too smart for his own good, as all
his attempts to make their music go viral simply backfires. Plus, he
wastes way too much time to spy on his girlfriend Kendra (Heather Mignon)
via the net without noticing that she's getting more and more frustrated
about the fact that he rather neglects her in real life. Then one day,
Odyn meets Richard Nullman (Edward Rhodes), professional troll and leader
of the Grid Gang, who has stumbled upon Odyn's activities online
and now wants to become his mentor teaching him to troll properly - and
Odyn's indeed a fast learner, becoming the equal to his teacher in no time
... but while Nullman has these diffuse ideas about changing the world,
Odyn soon finds out that he can also use his skills to pick up girls and
shag them under the pretense of giving them movie roles and the like. This
or course gets Nullman frustrated eventually, especially since his group
is about to break up and he thinks he actually deserves all the pussy Odyn
gets - but when Odyn proves to be not one to share, Nullman tries to
destroy him in the virtual world - but when it comes to trolling, Odyn has
indeed been a good student of his master - which leads to blood and tears
on all sides involved ... 001 Trolling is one weird
little movie, combining social and media and social media satire with
rather more visceral humour that doesn't shy away from (intentionally)
cringe-inducing jokes, the occasional silly sight gag and many a campy
moment - but the whole things really coming together thanks to a story
full of entirely unexpected plottwists, a directorial effort that knows
when to go for the punchline and when to hold back, and performances that
are just about the right amount of likeable or love-to-hate to work in the
movie's favour. Good, not so clean fun, really!
