Douglas (Nicholas Brendon), a fledgling screenwriter, and his wife
Veronica (Jackie Moore) have booked a cabin in the mountains so he can
clear his head and finally finish his first script. But Veronica had the
idea to also invite befriended married couple Dan (Phillip Andre Botello)
and Pia (Shoshana Wilder) up, at least for the weekend - and Doug is less
than happy, because while Dan was his colleague in his old job where the
two were buddies, Doug has since buried his past, and now Dan just comes
across as loud and insensitive to his artist's mind. Veronica gets along
fine with him though, a bit too fine maybe, and Doug develops fits of
jealousy. And before long, he has convinced himself that they're having an
affair. Thing is, while he detests Dan, Pia has really grown on Doug, as
like him she has a sensitive soul, and among all present she seems to be
the only one really interested in his screenplay. And since she apparently
enjoys his quality as well, he comes up with more and more excuses to be
alone with her, not even noticing how much it hurts his wife, who
presently has problems coming to terms with not being the youngest
anymore. And with all this going on, it's really only a matter of time
until things come to a head ...
Horror fan favourite Tuesday Knight has a cameo as a shopkeeper.
A pretty unusual film, as at heart it's a relationship drama,
but at the same time a character study of a man drifting into madness,
rolled into a psycho thriller where the lines between (the film's) reality
and the imagination of its lead character are blurred - so much to that
the film, and expecially its ending, are left open to interpretation. Now
this can of course be a recipe for disastr, but here it works very well,
thanks of course to a clever script, but also an elegant yet subtle
directorial effort and of course also a strong, relatable cast. And as
unusual as this movie might be, it's also well worth a watch.
