It should have been a simple drug raid for undercover cops Nordmann
(H.K. DeWitt) and Schweitzer (Cris Kotzen) and their team that was to have
culminated in the arrest of a Russian drug kingpin - but something goes
weird when they're doing so, as the raid by the by abandons common logic
and more and more into the realm of dreams, or nightmares to be more
precise, a place where past, present and future co-exist, space is in
constant flux, and one's deepest fears just pop to the surface. And
ultimately our heroes descend into the 9th level of hell - the Ptolomea
... I'll be honest here and say that this synopsis probably
isn't doing the film any justice, as I doubt any synopsis will, as TLMEA
is only loosely based on the narrative approach to storytelling and uses
mostly associative methods instead. That's not to say that the film loses
itself in its own metaphors, as it actually does make sense in its own
weird way, but it's also brilliant in creating audience expectations (by
way of genre elements and the like) and then crushing them, leading
audience expectations astray to rather awesome results. And add to that
very solid performances and a directorial effort that doesn't try extra
hard to duplicate the weirdness of its story but instead treats things
with subtlety, and you've got yourself a pretty great little movie!
