Somewhere up North Brule Conway (Grant Withers) & Pepite La Joie
(Monte Blue) fight over who's the best trapper - a fight largely decided
of course by the fact that Conway has German
Shepherd Rin Tin Tin jr as companion - and over the affections of Beth
(Grace Ford) - a fight that is not decided by rin Tuin Tin jr.
Naturally, baddie La Joie tries every trick in the book to prove
himself the better trapper, even robbing Conway's traps at night, but of
course Rinty has no troubles tracking down the villain, who, at the end
of the hunting season, is left with no furs of his own. So, while
Conway's away courting Beth & Rinty is guarding the furs, La Joie
devices the clever plan of luring the dog away with his own dog Nanette
("It is spring, the season of romance !"), then steals the
furs.
Totally ignoring the fact that Rinty only followed his master's
example in courting a lady of his own, Brule is mad at Rinty, but
Beth decides the dog should have a chance to redeem himself & tells
Rinty to get the thief. & tracking down is what Rinty's good at, so
he always stays just one step behind La Joie, even attacking him a few
times, & when the villain uses a canoe to go downriver, Rinty
eventually resorts to swimming after him. In the end, La Joie totally
throws away his nerves, & lays out traps to catch Rinty.
But Rinty -
being a trapper's dog - is way too familiar with traps & eventually
has La Joie caught in them himself. In the end, he also gets the girl
(Nanette).
This movie is mainly based on its canine star Rin Tin Tin jr, who
even has a romance here, so, if you're not into dogs, it might be a bit
of a letdown. The other letdown is the film's central subject -
maybe it's just postmodern political correctness finally having caught up with
me, but a fight of 2 men & a dog over nothing more than furs
does not prove too exciting a premise.
