Detective Black (Christian Ackerman) is investigating a killing spreee
that appears to be the work of a mad serialkiller - and then his wife
Melony (Danielle Ackerman) is abducted, and it seems the serialkiller is
behind it. Consequently, Black is drawn off the case, as he's simply too
close to it all - but pretty much as consequently, he continues to
investigate on his own - and soon finds out abouit a mysterious hospital,
where a certain Doctor Kaufman (Josh Meny) conducts weird experiments. But
when he gets too nosey, he has to find out he's not actually the hunter
here but the prey, as the good doctor is conducting experiments in the
field of mind transplantation - mainly in an effort to save his own
comatose wife (Johanna Ciampa) - and he's always more than willing to take
on an extra test subject ... like Black. Black makes numerous attempts
to escape, naturally, and sometimes seems to succeed, too ... but he
simply can't trust his own perception anymore. Finally the place is
stormed by the police (the chief had Black tailed all along) - but that
only complicates matters ... What might sound like your typical
dumbed down science fiction action flick is in fact something totally
different, something torally, utterly and enjoyably ... weird. Instead of
telling his plot in a by-the-numbers-way, writer/director Christian
Ackerman creates an other-worldly atmosphere all of his own, via massive
use of green screen, giving the whole thing a highly artificial look, via
unreal colour grading and black and white sequences, via haunting
soundscapes, obvious trip sequences, well-placed use of vintage pulp
clichées, and via using very unusual pacing to often disorient the
viewer. All of this put together feels very much like an off-beat
feverdream - but the best feverdream you ever had. Recommended.
