During an army demonstration of a new torpedo, reporters Ken (Sonny
Chiba) and Jenny (Peggy Neal) spot some kind of gillman (looking remotely
like the Creature from the Black Lagoon), but since noone in the
army cares to give any heed abuot their discovery, they decide to go for a
little diving expedition themselves ... and before long are kidnapped by a
gang of gillmen, and taken to an underwater city ruled by Doctor Moore
(Erik Neilson), who reveals his plans to them: Obviously he wants to rule
the world, and to that end has turned several people into cyborgs (which
is what the gillmen turn out to be), so they can operate under water. But
to properly conquer the world, Moore still needs the torpedo the army has
tested just the other day, & to that end kidnaps its inventor,
professor Howard.
Now the army, which was not too eager looking for Ken & Jenny, has
to react, and they send a sub down to save professor Howard, but the sub
soon finds itself under unfriendly fire ...
Meanwhile Doc Moore wants to force Howard to build him a torpedo, &
to that end starts the process of turning Ken & Jenny into cyborgs (he
doesn't get very far though, he only gives our couple some bad skin, which
causes Jenny to throw a hysteric fit).
Meanwhile our army friends have managed to find Moore's underwater city
and shoot some missiles at it, which destroy the cyborg-control panel,
causing the cyborgs to revolt, and the underwater city's atomic reactor,
which before long makes the city an unpleasent place to be.
Somehow, Ken, Jenny and professor howard make it through the revolting
caborgs, and Doc Moore and his guards, and in the end are the only 3
survivors of the city, which of course blows up in the end.
And professor Howard can even heal Jenny's skin.
Yes the film is every bit as silly and trashy as my synopsis suggests
it to be, with special effects not quite up to their task, bad
gillman-rubber-suits and quite some wooden actors. In other words, you
might love it ... or you might hate it but watch it repeatedly and show it
to all your friends.
