Lian, the greatest master of the boxers' world, is supposed to get Xu's
famous Deer Sword as a reward, but before it can be handed over to him,
it is stolen by a lady-thief (Candy Wen Hsueh-erh), claiming to be the
famous Xiao. But she seems not to be content with only having Lian's
sword, she soon tires to abduct his wife, Lady Chen, too. But Lady Chen
is saved by a bearded swordsman, who before long turns out to be the
real Xiao (Ti Lung), who - even though there is no similarity between
him & the impostor (not even in gender) - gets blamed for having
stolen the sword as well as having kidnapped Lady Chen, who has actually
saved her & taken her to his house solely for healing purposes.
Love
blossoms anyways.
When he takes Lady Chen back to her husband Lian
though, he is challenged to a martial arts duel by him, which he loses,
but Lian - living strictly by the martial arts code - won't kill him
because Xiao was wounded prior to their fight. However, Xiao soon loses
conciosness & is saved by man-eating Lady Feng (Lily Li), who is
after the sword herself. In the meantime, Lady Chen leaves her husband
because he fought Xiao, which promptly brings Lian to the conclusion
that Xiao hs abducted her again, & he trails Xiao down &
challenges him right after he awakens from his unconsciousness. This
time, though, Xiao wins the fight, but this time, he refuses to kill his
opponent because Lian went into the fight heartbroken. Furthermore, Xiao
promises to send Lian's wife back to him should he find her. &
Finding her he does, in his own home, because she has fallen in love
with him. But he finds not only her but also the fake female Xiao, &
escaping from her, he & Lady Chen hide in the Solitary Villa, where
they find a miniature boxers' world, & learn from the villa's master
Tian that this miniature world is in fact an enchanted place that holds
all the famous boxers shrunk down to a few inches. But not only that,
Tian has already tricked the 2 into being shrunk into that world
themselves. There they learn the only way of escaping from Miniature
world is when one spouse of a married couple loses enough blood to fill
a magic circle that the other spouse is allowed to leave. So Xiao &
Lady Chen see no other way out than to marry so that at least one of
them can escape. But fake female Xiao brings the message of the
impending wedding of his wife to Lian, who soon rushes to Solitary Villa
himself to also be tricked into entering Miniature World - where he
& Xiao soon meet each other in another duel. But enter Lady Feng,
who has found out that Miniature World is not an enchanted world after
all, only a remote valley with only one exit (through Solitary Villa)
sealed off by master Tian. Now Xiao & Lian finally join forces to
get back to the real world & face master Tian & his Master, who
turns out to be the honourable Xu (whose Deer Sword started the whole
story), who wanted desperately to be not only the grandmaster but also
the puppeteer of the boxers' world, & with the help of his daughter -
the fake, female Xiao - tried to gather all great fighters in his own
little valley. And as it turns out, Lady Chen - secretly Xu's adopted
daughter - was also helping him accomplishing his aims, having only
married Lian & romanced Xiao to lure them here. But in the final
fight, Lady Chen, realizing her love for Xiao was true, changes sides
& helps them fight Xu & his other daughter - even though she has
to die a heroine's death in the end.
Among martial arts films, Chu Yuan's adaptations of Ku Lung-stories
challenge the believability most consistently - & fascinatingly -,
as these movies always border on the fantasy genre. this movie is
another great & action-packed, colourful visit to the stylized,
almost absurd boxers' or martial arts-world - & another piece of
great entertainment !
