Penny (Danielle Donahue) got lucky - when all her friends and even her
fiancé got killed by a serialkiller called the Survivalist (Jesse-Lee
Lafferty), she didn't only manage to escape, she even managed to kill the
Survivalist in self defense, thus not only saving her own life but also
that of his potential future victims. Now some would call Penny a hero ...
but she doesn't feel like one: The Survivalist left her scarred, her face
is a mess, one of her eyes is destroyed, and her one knee might never
fully heal. Plus she has also lost all of her friends in one go, and even
the one man she ever loved. And the whole experience has left her with
horrible horrible nightmares. But of course, there are plenty of people
there who try to help her, people including Detective Mosser (Lonnie
Thomas), who even takes a personal interest in her, psychiatrist Dr Lentz
(Bruce Lentz), and even news anchor Alicia Hayes (Kaitlyn Shoeb), who
wants to make a hero out of her ... but Penny just wants to get away from
it all, being ripped out of her former life (not only has she lost all the
people dear to her, she has also been a stripper, an occupation no longer
open to her due to her scars), and people with good intentions but empty
phrases are the last thing she needs. Problem is, Penny starts having
nightmares, and they grow stronger almost daily - but the real problem is
that people turn up dead who she has dreamed about in her nightmares, and
Penny's less than sure she isn't guilty, having suffered from everything,
including severe anger issues, of late. But there might be much more to
this story than just an almost murder victim going wacko ... Survival
Knife is quite an intense little thriller, and not so much even
because it's gruesome and tense in all the right places (which it totally
is), but because it really keeps you guessing to the end, surprises you in
the end, and still comes across as logical enough regarding characters to
totally work. And add to that a directorial effort not solely based on
sensationalism, and a great central performance of Danielle Donahue, and
you've got yourself a very powerful movie - that might give you nightmares
though ...
