Ms. Sidley (Anne Bobby) is an old spinster with no friends, and while
she could have long retired she still insists teaching grammar school -
pretty much her job is her only contact to the outside world ... It all
starts when she asks little Robert (Andrew Lyndake) to build a sentence
with the word "tomorrow" and he comes up with "tomorrow
something bad will happen" - which freaks her out a bit, especially
when she thinks she sees little Robert transform into a monster in the
corner of her eye, but when she looks straight at him he's just the cute
boy he is. Later in the ladies' room, she thinks she's attacked by a
monster and is knocked out - which for the first time attracts the
attention (and concern) of her colleagues. The next day, when Robert
transforms into a monster before her very eyes and tells her there are
more like him, she totally freaks out, runs into the street and is almost
run over by a car ... Weeks of treatment follow, but she gets back on
track and is determined to return to her duties in school - but this time
she brings a gun. And we all know, guns and people don't mix ... Suffer
the Little Children is a very fun little piece of horror cinema, not
only because it's based on a wicked short story by Stephen King but also
because the directorial effort is rather restrained and subtle to make the
story work rather than going for the jugular right away. And Anne Bobby's
very nuanced central performance is what ultimately drives the film,
making this one a truly haunting experience.
