Joe Morgan (Alan Baxter) is a crook who is wanted for murder back in
the USA and now, living on a South Seas island, he's selling torpedoes to
the Nazis. But why then does he save a man, a sailor from a torpedoed
freight ship, from drowning - and not just any man but Jim Taggert (John
Litel), his arch enemy and the very man who, when he was still a cop,
accused him of murder in the first place. And it's not just that, Joe also
takes him to the island he has his headquarters on and provides him with
enough money to survive for a while. Taggert, though he has resigned, is
still a cop with every fiber of his body, and he soon finds out about
Morgan's crooked dealings, yet Morgan, while openly despising Taggert,
does nothing to get him out of the way - very much unlike his Nazi ally
Kroll (Georges Metaxa), who has him beaten up, makes attempts on his life
and the like. Finally, Taggert thinks he has gathered enough evidence to
arrest Morgan in the name of the USA, even though he's thousands of miles
out of his jurisdiction here, but now Morgan claims that Taggert only
knows half the truth - which is when the submarine Morgan has just
provided torpedoes for goes up with a bang, because in all his dealings
with the Nazis Morgan never forgot to send a timebomb along the way with
the torpedoes as a farewell present - which is his own brand of
patriotism. A shooting ensues, in which Kroll shoots Morgan but gets his
just desserts by the hands of Taggert. So-so wartime drama with
a patriotic and propagandistic subplot, rather predictable and obviously
made on the cheap - the limited sets and lack of actual action show that
-, yet not without its vintage charm. That said, the film is also far from
being a classic.
