Between 1993 and 1995, three people got killed,
their murders seemingly totally unrelated, different m.o., different
victim type, virtiaööy nothing to connect them - until investigating
detectives Kirby (Peter ZZizzo) and Taylor (Terry Apple) receive a letter
from a Mr. Shiny admitting to all three murdersm, and he knows too much
about them not to be taken seriously. However, other than the letter, our
detectives haven't got a single clue leading to Mr. Shiny, and since the
murder spree stops after the letter, it's assumed that he has just
disappeared one way or another . until 15 years later, when our heroes are
called to another murder scene and find a symbol painted onto the ceiling,
a symbol with which Mr. Shiny signed his letter all these yers back. And
soon enough, he also sends them a letter confessing to the murder - and he
kills again, and again, and again, and more and more his murders look like
ritualistic slaughters, and the mutilations he conducts start to follow a
pattern, And then, through a rejected victim (Oscar Jordan), our
investigators find out the real identity of Mr. Shiny, Leslie Sykes
(Jessee J. Clarkson), and going through his past they find out he was into
bizarre occult stuff. and his murders might serve a dark purpose. Thing
is, knowing someone's name does't mean one can get one's hand on them, and
even found out, Mr. Shiny only increases the murder rate - and eventually
the detectives figure he's working towards a certain planetary
alighment, which turns their investigation into a race against time ...
So ok, there is no Leslie Sykes a.k.a.;Mr Shiny, and there nevedr was,
and the dark mythology he has subscribed to is completely made up - and
yet the film is told like a documentary, full of talking heads, stock and
body camera footage that one could almost be fooled into believing it's
real. That said, despite its pseudo-documentary looks, this is a pretty
exciting movie, there's plenty of suspense, macabre and gruesome bits in
all the right places, and quite some inventive murders for the deicated
horror fan, too. So it might be rather unusual genre fare, but it's highly
entertaining nevertheless.
