review by
Mike Haberfelner

Takuya (Shinji Toudou) - who is of course secretly Spider-Man - has premonitions about his impending death at the hands of a merman, so he actually considers to not go out and fight the merman that is threatening the countryside - but then his girlfriend Hitomi (Rika Miura) is sent on an assignment to photograph the merman by her editor-in-chief, and to protect her he decides to go after the merman anyhow and try to change his fate.

However, Hitomi's editor-in-chief is really with the Iron Cross Army, an evil alien organisation led by Professor Monster (Mitsuo Ando) trying to take over the world, and the merman is one of their Machine Bem, a monster that can change size at will.

Soon enough, Spider-Man is in mortal combat with the merman, and he seems to die just like in his premonitions - when he sends a prayer to Garia, his deceased alien mentor, and suddenly he is either saved or saves himself from certain death (this part is left open to interpretation).

The story ends like all Spider-Man adventures: The merman grows to giant size and Spider-Man calls in his giant robot Marveller/Leopardon to fight and defeat the monster.

Of course, this episode, like all episodes of the series, is silly as hell, but if you like men in rubber suits fighting and pretending to be giant robots and monsters, this might be your thing anyhow, it's pure and campy mindless fun.
