The scientist team of The Phoenix
Rises is called in by the secret service again to help them track
down nuclear bomb components an organisation around AJ Bashir (Tamer
Hassan) tries to smuggle into the country to blow San Francisco off the
face of the earth. Now the problem is that Bashir doesn't understand
himself as terrorist let alone anarchist but as true patriot, and as such
it's easy for him to operate as ruthless as can be on one hand, on the
other to recruit top people. The secret service has one big problem,
their top field agent Tom (Adam Cardon) got injured during an operation,
nothing serious, just a broken leg, but enough to put him out of action
for a while ... just when he's needed the most. But among the scientists,
there is one woman, Jan (Catalina Soto-Aguilar), who has undergone a
secret service like training, who has proven herself more than capable to
handle tough situations (see The
Phoenix Rises), and who undergoes special training as if she was
born for it ... much to the dismay of Tom, who has tender feelings for her
... Being with the special forces has not only advantages though, at
some point Jan is kidnapped by Bashir and his group and almost tortured to
death, and she only manages to escape thanks to Tom's intervention. Still,
her colleagues are somewhat jealous, especially hacker Keith (Casey
Myers), who steps out of line and hacks pretty much every computer in the
entire organisation - a big no-no within the organisation of course, but
somehow he this way gets the information that leads to Bashir's bomb. But
that discovery only leads to a big shoot-out not everybody comes out of
alive ... Though done on a low budget, Sons of Liberty
is a very intelligent and complex espionage thriller that does make up its
lack of mind-blowing special effects one has to come to expect from a
movie of its ilk with a multi-layered narrative that also raises questions
of right and wrong, good and evil, that uses actual science as a very
strong root for its science fiction aspects, and that still moves along
rather smoothly and light-footedly. Add to this a very competent
direction, an extremely dynamic final shoot-out that really brings the
chaos of the situation to the fore without seeming chaotic, and a very
competent cast, and well, you've got yourself a winner! Recommended!
