In the not too distant future humankind thought it had found the
solution to climate change (I mean the one that wouldn't include to treat
our earth more responsibly), and by mistake thrown the earth into a new
ice age that killed pretty much all life - all life but that aboard the
Snowpiercer, a sort of ark on railway tracks that carried the last human
survivor but also the remnants of plant and animal life. But life aboard
the Snowpiercer is far from idyllic, especially for those living in the
wagons in the back, basically the working class that's constantly
exploited by the upper classes. But now, Gilliam (John Hurt), leader of
the passengers in the back, has devised a plan to get to the front to face
thrain creator and engineer Wilford (Ed Haris) to take over control, a
plan that includes breaking Namgoong (Song Kang-ho) and his daughter Yona
(Ko Asung) out of prison as only he knows how to open doors between
compartments, and she's a clairvoyant. Curtis (Chris Evans), the most
righteous of the lower classes, is to lead the rebellion, and he does
achieve a few early successes, which include taking minister Mason (Tilda
Swinton) captive and ensuring her assistance in exchange for her life.
Also, the train gets fancier from wagon to wagon, the passengers more
hedonistic and decadent. But then the rebellion walks into a few ambushes,
and its number is decimated time and again. But Curtis, Namgoong and Yona
make it all the way to the front - but to Curtis' shock, Namgoong and Yona
want to actually break out of the Snowpiercer to start life anew in the
ice, while what Curtis, finally face to face with Wilford, learns doesn't
please him one bit ... Now what I first and foremost got out of
watching Snowpiercer was, I want to read the graphic novel, it must
be truly awesome! Snowpiercer (the movie) presents us with some
fascinating concepts, but due to restricted running time (approximately 2
hours as it is), many of the more intersting ideas are only hinted at or
abandoned all too soon to keep the main storyline going. And that's the
problem of the film, it tries to put way too much into its story and falls
short time and again. That's not to say it's a bad movie at all, it's well
directed, stringently told, the acting's adequate to strong, it just falls
short of being great. Basically it has way too much world-building to do
to make the story wholly coherent, and too much story to tell to
concentrate on world-building - and as a consequence feels like full of
more plotholes than it actually has. It's pretty alright entertainment
still, but no more ...
