Major Sholto (Herbert Lomas) & Captain Marston (Edgar Norfolk) persuade
one-legged imprisoned crook Jonathan Small (Graham Soutten) to tell them the
whereabouts of the loot of his last heist & in return promise him to help
him with a jailbreak. But once Sholto & Marston find the treasure, Sholto
becomes too greedy, kills Marston right on the spot & lets Small rot in
prison ...
Years later, when Sholto reads of Small's escape from prison, his conscience
catches up with him, & he calls his sons Thaddeus (Miles Malleson) &
Bartholomew (Kynaston Reeves) & has them promise to turn over a third of
the family fortune to Marston's daughter Mary (Isla Bevan) to make up for the
death of her dad ... then Sholto dies of fright as he has seen Small's face in
the window ...
Mary Marston, upon having received not only a part of the Sholtos' fortune
but also a mysterious letter that invites her to a talk with the Sholtos, has
enough common sense to turn to Sherlock Holmes (Arthur Wontner) & Doctor
Watson (Ian Hunter) for help ... & not a moment too soon, because as soon
as she, Holmes & Watson enter the Sholtos' mansion, Bartholomew Sholto is
found dead, & the local police inspector Jones (Gilbert Davis) is quick to
arrest his brother Thaddeus for it ...
Holmes however is not quite as quick to jump to conclusions & soon he
finds traces not only to Small but also his accomplices, the tattooed man
Bailey (Roy Emerton) & the snake tamer Tonga (Togo), the carnival they are
travelling with, and the ship they plan to leave the contry with, plus her
captain Mordecai Smith (Moore Marriott).
Watson however, less brainheavy than Holmesm, decides to take matters into
his own hands & take Miss Marston - whom he has fallen for - to the
carnival, since she has actually seen the tattooed Man once before. Bad idea of
course, since when Watson conveniently turns his back, Mary is kidnapped. It
all ends in a boat chase on River Thames & a fistfight in a warehouse,
& in the end the baddies ghet their just dessert, & Watson (!) gets the
girl.
A very stagey & very talky Sherlock Holmes-adventure, that
spends more time in its hero explaining his deductions than it does in showing
the characters doing anything. it is not until the action finally shifts to the
carnival (with Watson & Mary looking for the Tattooed Man - about 3
quarters in the movie) & the ensuing chases that the movie picks up any
pace ... which unfortunately is rather too late.
