Thanks to lovely Mary marston (ann bell), Sherlock Holmes (Peter
Cushing) & Doctor Watson (Nigel Stock ) - who immediately falls for lovely
Mary - are invited to Thaddeus Sholto (Paul Daneman), who turns out to be
Marys secret benefactor, having sent her a pearl every year - because he
feels he owes her since his father (Jiohn Dunbar) has derived her father
of a treasure years ago, & since Thaddeus had no idea where his
(deceased) father has hidden the treasure, he figured sending pearls is
the most sensible thing to do.
... but all that has changed now, since he & his brother
Bartholomew (also Paul Daneman) have found the treasure at his brother's
place, & Thaddeus figures now at last he can give nmary her fair share
...
Only when they arrive at Bartholomew's place, Bartholomew is dead, the
treasure is gone, & inspector Jones (John Stratton) arrests Thaddeus
& everyone in Bartholomew's household. Holmes meanwhile is given free
reign to investigate on his own, & he soon figures that the real
culprits are a one legged man and a pygmy, & funny he should mention
it, the guy who has found the treasure together with Mary's &
Thaddeus' father, Jonathan Small (Howard Goorney), has only one leg
& a pygmy friend, Tonga (Zena Keller).
Soon, Holmes has found out where to find him, & it all culminates
in a boat chase on river Thames, where the pygmy dries to shoot poison
darts from a blowpipe but is shot by Watson.
Small, it turns out, didn't want noone killed, but try telling that to
a pygmy (if you're asking yourself WHAT ? in capital lettters here
... you are right).
Watson meanwhile wants to present the treasure to Mary, but to
everyone's disappointment the treasurebox proves to be empty - Small has
emptied it into the Thames out of frustration (what ? once again).
A reasonably lively pace & a bit of action make this one of the
better episodes of the series, but still, the direction is very stagey,
the exotic aspects of the story (after all, this is about a treasure hunt
which includes a pygmy and a boat chase) are totally lost here, & due
to cutting down the novel to a mere 50 minutes, there are plotholes
aplenty ...
