Bill (Nicholas Vince) is supposed to be the new librarian at an old
castle, but the caretaker (Laurence R. Harvey) welcomes him with utter
dismay. And Bill is soon freaked out by the atmosphere of the building,
its many waxworks he mustn't touch, and its rats in the walls - yet, he
shows resolve to sit it out - until he has to go to the bathroom, and when
wanting to ask for directions he runs into a creature who promptly comes
after him, and he can only escape with the help of the caretaker. Thing
is, once he's out he here's the voice of his wife (Jessica Messenger) from
the inside, and knows he has to go and fetch her - but he might be led a
little astray and ... Rats is quite a wonderful little
piece of horror, mixing gothic horror and creature feature rather
cleverly, fueling its slightly grotesque story with just the right
atmosphere, and making perfect use of its location (Warwick Castle, UK)
and its many creepy waxworks, which are fitted into the story rather
organically. And of course, a top notch cast doesn't hurt one bit either!
