Devereaux (Paul Noonan), reporter for a failing Los Angeles newspaper,
is pulled off a story he has been preparing for weeks by his editor
(David Pridemore) to interview Ramirez (Marco Sandoval), a serial
killer awaiting conviction in prison. He's reluctant to even accept
the assignment as he has a personal stake in Ramirez's killing spree,
but with the paper in shambles, he has little choice but to go for
sensationalism, especially since Ramirez has specifically asked for
him to do the interview. Once they sit opposite one another in a
prison cell, with Ramirez well secured, the killer immediately tries
to take the lead, but Devereaux was well prepared for this and tries
to come off as uninterested as possible — especially when Ramirez
starts to talk about God and the Devil. This babble goes on so long
that Devereaux actually stands up to leave. But Ramirez still has one
card up his sleeve ... Basically, Ramirez is a character piece that pits two men against
one another in psychological warfare. Now this of course only works if
the characters are well-written with strong arcs, and the actors
embodying them are solid and deliver their A-game — and all of this is
the case with this movie, which is mostly (though by no means
exclusively) set in a prison cell. And a thriller-savvy directorial
effort that keeps up the tension throughout also helps make this one
cool suspense piece.
