Since childhood, David (Derek Young) had been bullied by pretty much
everyone, from the typical brainless jock to the prom queen who'd rather
die than being seen talking to him. He never fought back though, kept his
peaceful attitude through all he had to go through - and then his foster
mother (LC Macabre), the only one who always stood by him, dies. A few
weeks later, his foster father (Adam Ginsberg), who has held David
responsible for her death and who has always bullied him as well, kills
himself. And suddenly, David learns, that while he and his foster family
lived a trailer trash life, his "dad" actually had a
considerable fortune in the bank, plus he owned a quite successful strip
joint - all of which falls into David's hands, and he suddenly realizes he
never has to work again. Plus as the owner of a strip club he makes sure
that his girls are treated properly, does offer those who are in it out of
desparation an easy and profitable way out of this job they seem to hate
while giving those who want to stay in a little more power and
responsibility than one would expect in a strip joint. So all's well that
ends well, is that the point, and being the bullied guy who never fought
back made David the man he is? Not by a longshot: It has to be stated
here that after he rather accidently killed one guy who bullied him, David
found encouragement to stand up for himself, so he killed his foster dad
and made it look like suicide, and with the freedom the unexpected
inheritance offered him, he had enough time to think up plans to get back
at the guys and girls who were mean to him (or he thought were mean to
him), plans that often involved dismemberment and other gruesome things,
and always ended in the death of some not so innocent soul. But
eventually, the disappearance of a few too many bodies does alarm the
police ... Psychotic State is definitely a movie that
does have its heart in the right place, and that tells a morality tale in
an exquisitely wicked and macabre way that involves gore and
dismemberment, with quite a bit of sleaze thrown in to make this one a
nice hommage to 1970's grindhouse cinema. That said though, Psychotic
State is far from a perfect film: Basically it at 2 hours and 20 it
takes about an hour too long to tell its story, and lacks narrative
build-up, so while there are several scenes of pure suspense, the tension
hardly carries over into the more narrative scenes. On top of that,
several subplots/character arcs just lead to nowhere. Plus, presenting a
rich collection of rather stellar special guests just in form of public
service announcements (probably filmed at some con) tagged onto the
beginning and the end of the movie is really a bit of a disappointment
especially to fans of these people who'd like to see them in action -
though that said, wrestler Jake the Snake Roberts - who admits to having
been a bully earlier in his life - hammers the movie's message home the
best. It's still a film with a lot of heart, and quite a bit of blood
and guts ... it's just not where it could have been ...
