Colonel Marshall (Mike Monty) has defected to the Vietcong and
established a terrorist training camp somewhere deep in the Vietnamese
jungle. Naturally the CIA is opposed to this, so they send Python (Miles
O'Keefe) and his gang of mercenaries into the jungle to put an end tho the
Marshall's shenanigans - a gang that also includes Howard, the son of
Marshall himself.
In the jungle, Python and co gun down Vietcong by the dozen, and
eventually they make it to the camp and wreak havok to it.
Finally, Howard has his father at gunpoint, but he hesitates if only
for a second - enough time for father to rip the gun out of his hand and
turn the tables - but ultimately, Python shoots Colonel Marshall to save
Howard ... and the free world (?) of course.
Obviously, this film was inspired by the immensely successful Rambo
- First Blood Part II - but compared to Phantom Raiders even
that film, basically an exercise in reactionary bluntness, seems subtle
and multi-layered. The plot of Phantom Raiders is skeletal at best,
there is no character development, heck there aren't even characters, the
film mainly consists of people running through the jungle and gunning down
people for just under 90 minutes - which is so blunt and nihilistic it's
almost funny, but it runs far too long to be really good fun and thus
remains nothing but forgettable trash ... No real need to watch.
