At a séance, mysterious Vanessa Ives (Eva Green), supposed to be only
a participant, proves to be an actual medium, something she's not very
fond of. Meanwhile, at a cheap hotel, sharp shooter Ethan Chandler (Josh
Hartnett) meets Brona Croft (Billie Piper), a prostitute he soon falls in
love with - and she indeed enjoys his affectation. But she also becomes
the new favourite prostitute of dandy Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney),
especially because her condition - she suffers from consumption - makes
him enjoy his immortality even more, and when she spits blood into his
face during sex, that's ecstasy for him. Finally, Frankensteinb (Harry
Treadaway), teaches his creature, who he affetionally calls Proteus (Alex
Price), the ways of man, and Proteus is an attentive student and quick
learner. Frankenstein couldn't be happier when his original (abandoned)
creature (Rory Kinnear) shows up in his lab and tears Proteus apart ... I
can't help it, but this episode is an example where the whole is less than
the sum of its parts. Basically it just tells four stories that are not
really interwoven (despite the fact that some share characters), and other
than the Frankenstein plot don't even have story arcs. Basically this one
seems so intent to whet the audience's appetite to things to come that it
forgets to spin a yarn of its own. But sure enough, all the narrative
threads are interesting enough to keep one watching - and hoping for more
action in the next episode ...
