Many years into the future, civilisation as we know it has pretty much
crumbled, most of mankind has been wiped out, and what has remained has
gathered in small tribes all over the world. One such tribe is the Varosha
Tribe, a tribe which chooses its leader with the three worthiest of every
generation being taken to some forbidden forest by their current leader,
to one of them prove him-/herself leader material. Dangers in the
forbidden forest are manyfold, as the "Others" who have once
driven the Varoshas' forefathers from their original village, are still
said to roam the woods. This time, it's up to chief Nus (Luke D'Silva)
to take the candidates on their mission, as there are the rather naive
Thade (Adam Bond), Ares (Marc Zammit) the cunning and the emotionally
unstable Eiren (Jade Hobday) to the forbidden forest ... and it's not long
before Thade has broken his foot, Ares wants to leave him to die, and
Erin's bad temper gets them all almost killed that Nus has to realize none
of the group is leader material ... but then the trouble really start when
a woman with a box, Flinn (Laura Marie Howard) arrives on the scene
followed by a trio of hunters she only manages to chase away with the
content of the box, a handgun. But Nus gets killed in the struggle, Flinn
passes out, the three candidates get their hands on the box - and now they
try to figure out what to do with the woman and the box, all the while of
course still fighting over who's to become leader of their tribe. But as
always, if you give humans too effective a weapon and a reason to fight,
things end gorily ... Made on a very limited budget, Pandorica
is a movie that really manages to make the most out of everything, thanks
not only to its beautiful backdrops that really make the film look much
bigger than the budget might suggest, but also a clever story that keeps
one involved from the beginning, never lets loose regarding tension and
surprises, and doesn't waste time with unnecessary explanations but still
manages to build a plausible world all of its own. And all of this is
helped by a very economic yet driven directorial effort, well-staged
action, and strong performances by all. Definitely worth a look!
