Otto (David
Ryan Kopcych) is deeply in love with his neighbour Patty (Lindsey
Elisabeth Cork) ... but it's not only that she's out of his league to even
ask out, she's also in a relationship with Hector (Gio Castellano) - an
abusive relationship that is, as Otto knows well hearing them argue every
night ... so much so that Hector eventually shoots Patty dead, then
hastily bails, with Otto witnessing it all. And now Otto knows his time
has come, as he drags dead Patty's body over to his apartment and ...
well, let's just say he doesn't let a little thing such as death stand in
the way of his happiness ... Ok, so maybe my
synopsis makes Next/Door sound like a vile, disgusting piece of
exploitation - but as a matter of fact, it is not, it's a very macabre
comedy brought to life by a darkly funny yet restrained script, very
likeable central performance by David Ryan Kopcych, and a subtle enough
directorial effort to let the story unfold without resorting to
sensationalism. Sure, the whole thing's a bit on the dark side ... but
totally watchable all the same!
