After 10 years out of highschool, it's class reunion for the class of
'72. Bad thing though that at their graduation party, the kids had played
a trick on Walter (Blackie Dammett) that led to him having sex with his
own sister and consequently turned him into a nutcase ... and he has
chosen the class reunion to have his revenge on his old classmates,
especially goddie two-shoes blonde Meredith (Shelley Smith), whom he, like
everyone else, had a crush on back in school. Before anyone knows,
Walter starts killing people and locking the whole class into their old
school building, and only a psychiatrist, Dr. Young (Michael Lerner), claims he
knows what's going on, but he proves to be pretty useless. Actually, only
Gary (Fred McCarren), the class's nobody whom nobody seems to really
remember, is doing something productive and ultimately even finds a way
out, but that's when Dr. Young has already persuaded Meredith to act as
bait for Walter - but what he didn't tell her was that he himself is
actually Walter in disguise. Watler manages to strip her and is just about
to kill her when Gary interferes, and ultimately the united forces of the
class of '72 can persuade Walter to give himself up ... and Gary gets the
girl, Meredith, though she still can't really remember his name ... This
could have been a brilliant slasher-parody, at a time when slasher movies
were produced a dime a dozen. This could have been, but it isn't.
Obviously neither scriptwriter John Hughes nor Michael Miller have seen
too many slashers back in the day, so instead of being topical, National
Lampoon's Class Reunion is just a series of old and non-specific gags
that seem to have been pushed into a slasher context rather by accident.
That Miller's direction lacks any proper comic timing doesn't help one bit
in that respect, nor does the complete lack of creepy atmosphere. And that
obviuosly, none of the actors seem to have talent as comedians is just one
more thing that makes National Lampoon's Class Reunion decidedly
less than special. Unless you hate to be amused and/or frightened, this
is definitely not worth your time.
