It's really not Keefer's (Jay Larson) day: First he gets fired from his
dead end job, then he gets a ticket from the police, then he catches his
girlfriend (Elizabeth Stoko) cheating on him with ... a transvestite
(Clayton Glabis). And since he has been a useless slob all of his life,
there's nothing that Keefer can fall back on, all he was ever any good at
was ... eating - which gives his best friend Meegosh (Kevin Interdonato)
an idea: Why not run an underground competitive eating promotion? So
Keefer becomes a competitive eater - and suddenly he is a success, he has
fans, gets girls, is a star in his own right ... much to the dismay of
mayor Fingstal (John Charles Hunt), who wants to make his city a health
food city - not because he's into health food or lives a healthy
lifestyle, it's all just for gouvernment funds of course. So he wants to
drive Keefer, Meegosh and their little promotion out of town ... but
somehow they can instead bribe him, a former competitive eater himself,
into an eating competition to end all eating competitions, the titular
Nacho Mountain, where the winner's determined by who's the first to eat a
literal mountain of nachos with jalapeno - and Fingstal has the advantage,
too, because Keefer can't eat anything too spicy. But Keefer's a fighter
... Of course, Nacho Mountain is gross as can be - but
for a change, the grossness goes with the film's topic, as everybody who's
ever been to a competitive eating event can confirm. Apart from that, the
film's humour is utterly respectless - which is at times hilarious, at
times a bit too forced for my taste, and it could have done with a few
less fart jokes (though at least one fart joke in this one is absolutely
wonderful and essential to the film's story). The cast of this film is
comprised of an assortment of likeable weirdos, so somehow the
(intentionally) silly story comes across as rather compelling, while a
compact directorial effort gets the most out of the (apparently tight)
budget. This all results in not exactly a masterpiece, but a great party
film - best enjoyed with nachos I suppose ...
