Marissa (Allison Sonson) sends in a submission video for a movie, then a
second one because she didn't read the guidelines carefully enough when
she sent the first, then she sends a third one, then an fourth one where
she finally reads her lines, then a fifth one to unsubmit from the movie
because she thought the lines were inappropriate. In her six video she
wants to re-submit because she has only just understood this was a comedy,
in her seventh video she shows herself in the dress she'd like to wear in
the movie ... and somehow sending videos to the person casting the movie
soon develops a life of its own - Arissa eventually calls it an art
project -, and in her videos she talks about everything from existential
topics to sex, and soon enough doesn't care how she comes across anymore,
up to the point where she suggests to fuck someone on camera. And that she
might have gone way too far only occurs to her when it's much too late ...
Now found footage films can go many ways, and seemingly this one
goes the easiest way, after all it's just a girl filming herself in her
apartment, no action or spectacle or special effects, not even
interaction with others (safe for the final scene). At the same time the
film takes also an enormous risk, as what if the girl and/or her
performance just fail to land? After all the movie basically hinges on
her, if she can't bring even the best script to life that will sink the
whole film. Fortunately though, Allison Sonson is more than up for the
task, she's relatable, she's bubby and funny when need be but can also be
seductive or vulnerable, and doesn't shy away from being plain awkwatd
when the situation demands it. So big props to her of course. That said,
she's also helped by a clever script that turns what's basically a
non-story into something interesting, making for an unusual but also quite
fascinating watch. And if this has gotten you at all interested, you
can get this movie from Gumroad here:
