Pretty Marilyn (Beverley Owen), the "weird-looking" of the
Munster-family, has been dating Tom (Linden Chiles) for quite some time -
so her substitute parents Uncle Herman (Fred Gwynne) and Aunt Lily (Yvonne
De Carlo), plus Grandpa (Al Lewis) decide they have to meet his parents
(Mabel Albertson, Frank Wilcox) ... problem is, Herman looks like the
Frankenstein monster, and Lily and gramps are actually vampires. They
don't find that strange, it's normal to them, and they're square as can
be, but they insist on nobody else finding them strange, either ... Fortunately,
the event Tom's parents invite the Munsters to is a masque, so they
initially stick out in any way, and everything goes fine at first - even
if Herman is slightly puzzled by the fact that Tom's dad is dressed up as
Frankenstein's monster, resembling himself a bit too closely. But when
Herman wins first price for best costume for his real face, this is an
utter insult, and the Munsters steam off. Tom drives Marilyn home and
tries to calm things down, but when he sees the Munsters as they really
are, he takes a powder ... In a way, this episode (as much of
the series) is based on a single joke - that creepy is normal for the
Munsters, which causes lots of confusion. However, it works better than it
legally should, simply because it's greatly actedand Fred Gwynne, Yvonne
De Carlo and Al Lewis simply have great chemistry as the square
"creepy" family, and all know how to carry the joke with
dignity. That all said, Munster Masquerade isn't even one of the
better episodes of the series ...
