Somehow, young Eddie (Butch Patrick) manages to persuade his dad Herman
(Fred Gwynne) to race his friend Sandy's (Brian Corcoran) dad (Henry
Beckman) in a drag race - without mentioning of course that Sandy's dad is
a professional drag racer. So, muc to the dismay of his wife Lily (Yvonne
De Carlo), Herman soups up the family car and goes to the drag strip
brimming with confidence - and thus lets Sandy's dad talk him into a bet
considering their race - the winner gets the loser's car ... and of
course, Herman loses. When Herman and Eddie arrive home from the race on a
bus, Lily's understandably furious - but Grandpa (Al Lewis) has a
solution, so he and Herman build a new race car out of a coffin and organ
pipes, for Grandpa to race Sandy's dad, and again, the winner gets the
loser's car. And since this time around Sandy's dad drives the Munsters'
family car, he's not too sure he'll win, so he steals Grandpa's braking
parachute - after all, if he can't stop he can't collect. But of course,
everything ends happily, with Grandpa winning the race, Herman saving
Grandpa's life, and the family car back in the possession of the Munsters. Somehow
one can't but love the original Munsters, and not so much
even because the comedy is of such high quality, but because it's played
out so very nicely, with the leads all being on-point with their
characters and clearly enjoying themselves and just having great chemistry
between one another - and this episode is a perfect example of this.
Neither is it super-original, nor the humour all that refined, but it
flows just so very nicely one can't help but simply enjoying it.
