Kit Li (Jet Li) was once a top cop withthe special forces, but then a
very evil terrorist, the Doctor (Kelvin Wong), caused him to lose his wife
(Suki Kwan) & a busload of children when trying to dismantling a bomb
...
Years later: Kit has quit the force & found employment as a
bodyguard for martial arts superstar Frankie Lane (Jacky Cheung) - and as
his stunt double, because despite Lane claims that he does all his stunts
himself, most of the time he is just too drunk, & Kit has to step in
... soon an investigative reporter, Helen (Chingmy Yau) is on the verge of
uncovering this little secret - but that should be the least of Frankie
Lane's problems ...
Frankie is invited to a social function, where priceless diamonds are
exhibited in a hotel, but the priceless diamonds also attract the Doctor
& his gang. Soon, the terrorists take the whole hotel hostage to get
the diamonds, & will stop at nothing to pull through their plan -
& if that means killing a lot of peopkle all the better. The only one
who can save everyone inside the hotel now is - you guessed it - Kit. But
unfortunately. Frankie has left him witht he car outside, so before he can
start saving, Kit has to shoot & fight his way in ...
Many fights & shoot-outs later Kit has pretty much decimated the
Docotr's gang & chased him out of the hotel ... when he finds Helen -
whom he has since fallen in love with - attached to a bomb exactly like
the one that blew up his wife.
In a cathartic moment, he not only finally sees through the Doctor's
dirty little trick (that cost his wife's life) & not only saves Helen,
but he even has an ace up his sleeve, as he has pricked the Doctor's skin
with a knife dipped in snake venom ... & outside the hotel, the
Doctor, who thought himself in safety, dies miserably in the streets &
upon dying is robbed by a group of teenage punks ...
In the end, yes, Kit gets the girl, & whimpish actor Frankie Lane
gets back his self esteem, after having defeated the terrorists' top
martial artist (Billy Chow).
During his career, Wong Jing has directed quite a few good films (e.g. God
of Gamblers, Evil Cult) & has produced even better ones
(e.g. the Young and Dangerous-series, The Duel). This
film however is rather a disappointment, an action-packed but faceless
rip-off of Die Hard, that Wong Jing has reportedly done as a
send-up of Jacke Chan (the collaboration with whom on City Hunter
in 1993 neither had really enjoyed too much). The outcome is a strange
hybrid of broad comedy & all-out violence with very little
uninteresting & unconvincing to hold the thing together - &
despite well-choreographed action scenes, the film can't help getting
boring.
