Because he has turned him into a homicidal monster, scientist Suzuki (Tetsu Nakamura) has to kill his own brother Kenji. This however doesn't keep Suzuki from wanting to experiment some more on humans, just to prove that evolution can be caused by us humans ... & soon enough he finds an unwitting victim for his experiment in American foreign correspondent Larry (Peter Dyneley), whom he, when he stops by for an interview, drugs & injects with some evolution-serum.

At first nothing much happens, in fact nothing at all, & Larry is already packing his bags to go home to New York. On his last day though, Doc Suzuki pays him a visit, invites him to a geisha party, gets him drunk, & soon enough Larry lands in bed with a geisha, even if he has a loving wife, Linda (Jane Hylton)

Soon enough, Larry forgets about going home, enjoys drinking & sleeping around, & before long the Doctor fixes it that he falls in love with his lab assistant Tara (Terri Zimmern), who doesn't object to playing the role of mistress to her boss.

Soon enough, Larry, the typical cleancut average kind of guy, turns into an irresponsible, moody & ill-tempered man, who, when his wife comes to get him home, dumps her for Tara. Then he starts murdering people. When his best friend & editor Matthews (Norman Van Hawley) tries to get him an appointment with a shrink (Alan Tarlton), Larry even murders the shrink.

Eventually, Larry finds an eye growing out of his shoulder, then a whole head. He starts killing more frequently too. Soon Matthews sees himself forced to blow the whistle on him to the police, & suddenly Larry finds himself on the run ...

Finally, Larry returns to Doc Suzuki, who was just about to commit harakiri ... so in a way Larry helps him when he kills him, then he wrecks his lab & makes off with Tara, whom he had knocked unconscious, with the police hot on his trail.

Eventually, Larry is split in two altogether, his old self & a hairy beast. & while the beast wants to throw Tara into the nearby volcano, Larry struggles to save her - but to no avail, all he can do is throw the beast into the volcano as well. Then he lets the police arrest him.

But was it really Larry who committed the murders, or better yet, how much of Larry committed the murders ?

One of the very few actual Amreican-Japanese co-productions of the 1960's (most films were only spiced up with American shot scenes for American release), this little oddity finds itself sitting between quite a few stools: In parts, the film is very moodily directed, the directors really manage to create a briooding atmosphere ... but then of course, there is that silly monster head growing out of Larry's shoulder. In parts too, this is an interesting story of man trying to tamper with nature, & when he succeds he doesn't get wuite the results he has hoped for ... but then there's the main character suddenly & quite stupidly splitting in two at the climax of the story.

Actually, when you can accept the shoddy special effects, unconvincing hairy monster suits & the occasional story stupidity, you might come to like the film - & not only in a so-bad-it's-good way.
