Chris (Louis James) has been experiencing low cash flow lately, but he has
heard about widower Lucas (Stuart Wolfe-Murray) looking for a documentary
film crew to explore his large mansion - and Chris is not a documentary
filmmaker, but he has heard the loot from some heist is hidden somewhere
in the mansion, she he drums up a crew - his girlfriend Lisa (Sarah
Alexandra Marks), his estranged sister (Kim Spearman) and a chance
acquaintance, Andy (Rui Shang) - to pose as a film crew and give the place
a good lookover. After all, stealing the loot would be a victimless crime,
as Lucas has no idea about it and the original owners of whatever-it-is
have probably long been re-imbursed while the original thieves have long
been imprisoned. Now while exploring the place, they sure find something,
but not what they're looking for: For one, a dead body, and for two, some
chest that they open that unleashes pure evil. And then Lucas turns up and
stabs them all to death - only for them to enter the house yet again - and
while things take a slightly different turn, Lucas kills them all once
more. None of them know they've been in this situation before, none but
Laura, who tries to find out more and more about this time loop before
Lucas kills all of them yet again, to eventually find out that Lucas has
been caught in the same loop for much longer, and has since come up with a
plan to beat it. Unfortunately, this plan doesn't come without it risks
and murder ... Now I would be blatantly lying if I'd say
Manor of Darkness wasn't quite a bit far-fetched - but then
again, I think above synopsis already suggests as much - and yet the movie
works, basically because it manages to remain within the film's logic
throughout and work the time-loop concept that's usually more of a science
fiction thing into its horror framework rather flawlessly. Add to that a
genre savvy direction and a very solid cast, and you've got yourself a
really cool piece of genre entertainment.
