Lumberjack Red (Nicolas Cage) and his artist wife Mandy (Andrea
Riseborough) live a pretty peaceful life up in the mountains, and they're
so in love with each other - so things couldn't be better. But then Mandy
catches the eye of cult leader Jeremiah (Linus Roache), who at one night
decides to stage a home invasion on Red and Mandy's place with his
disciples, where they tie up Red, then have their fun with Mandy before
ultimately killing her in the most brutal way. Thing is, Red manages to
escape his ties and his tormentors - and he's pissed and can think about
nothing but revenge. And he's determined to get it, too, be it via
crossbow, sword or chainsaw ... Now ok, above synopsis might
sound like a very simplistic revenge tale, and storywise, Mandy
might be just that, which might only heightened by some of the ways Red
does get revenge ... but on a visual and emotional level, Mandy is
just so much more, it's basically trippy mindfuck as it bombards one with
brilliantly weird imagery throughout, always chooses grotesque over
realistic, even when it doesn't have to, doesn't shy away from the absurd,
while narrative logic is ever so often deliberately thrown out of the
window ... and that works for the movie for a change, giving it more the
feeling of a drug-induced experience than a tale that has already been
told too often. And of course, Nicolas Cage's at times outrageous acting
style totally fits in with the whole picture here. Now true, not
everybody will actually get this movie, but if you're open for
something more than a little bit weird, you're in for a treat.
