Doctor Frankenstein (Dennis Price) & his assistant Morpho (Jess Franco)
have just successfully revived Frankenstein's monster (Fernando Bilbao), but
thy won't live to tell, since almost immediately afterwards, the (naked)
birdwoman Melissa (Anne Libert) comes to kill them off, on the behest of her
master, the evil wizard Cagliostro (Howard Vernon).
But why does Cagliostro want them dead ?
He wants the monster, & a mate he is just about to assemble in his lab,
to procreate a new masterrace.
Frankenstein however lives long enough to tell his friend & colleague
Doctor Seward (Alberto Dalbés) to retrieve his monster ... but Seward, &
police inspector Tanner (Daniel J.White) don't have a single clue of where to
start.
Then Frankenstein's daughter Vera (Beatriz Savón) arrives at her father's
castle, & she immeditely tries to revive her father, which he manages to do
only for a few minutes ... just long enough to warn her, too, of Cagliostro.
& while Seward & Tanner are still chasing phantoms, Vera tries a
different approach & follows the monster around - which is collecting
bodyparts for the woman his master is assembling - & persuades it to abduct
her instead of the nude model it was about to abduct. Her plan however wasn't
really thought through, since Cagliostro immediately reognizes her, forces his
will upon her & tells her to finish his female creature (who turns out to
be lovely Britt Nichols) for him.
But Seward & Tanner haven't been idle in the meantime & have revived
Frankenstwein for a few minutes yet again - just long enough to tell them where
to find Cagliostro & then in a desperate attempt try to kill them (for no
real reason).
Seward & tanner rush to Cagliostro's castle, where the monster is about
to mount his mate for lovemaking purposes in some black magic ceremony, &
our 2 heroes have the splendid idea to persuade the monster to instead turn
against its master & his minions - which the monster soon does, killing of
many of Cagliostro's minions, while Cagliostro himself escapes ... but drives
his escape-coach over some nearby cliffs.
Is this the end of Cagliostro ?
No, it will take him a mere 9 months to be reborn ...
In her first role, Lina Romay plays a gypsy woman that doesn't really have
any connection with the proceedings.
One of Jess Franco's funniest horrorfilms so far. For this one he just
plunges into the pool of genre-motifs head-on & pulls out whatever he can
find, giving little thought about internal logic of the plot or linear
storytelling, instead presenting it all as an over-the-top & definitely
tongue in cheek hommage to the genre as such, garnered by eroticism, sadism,
Franco's typical camerawork consisting of weird angles, zoom-ins &
zoom-outs aplenty & bumpy camera-movements, & a truly mad performance
by Howard Vernon ... you just have to love (or hate, if you take it seriously)
that film.
