On "Blood Island" the monsters are loose (again): Mad Doctor Ronald Remy injects many of the natives he
holds prisoner in his underground-lab chlorophyll, turning their blood
(& skin) green. But, as such experiments (in horror movies, at
least) are bound to go wrong, one of his "patients" (he was
looking for a cure for leukaemia, actually) has turned into a
bloodthirsty monster with only a vague remembrance of his past life
(that's actually why he refuses to kill his son & his former lover).
Luckily, hero John Ashley interferes, with Angelique Pettyjohn providing
the love interest).
Another of these easy-to-love, easy-to-despise Filipino horror
movies, & as the title already suggests, one of Eddie Romero's &
Gerardo de Leon's Blood Island- movies. The plot was already old
even back in the 60's, & the addition of a little gore (some
dismemberments are actually quite graphically handled) didn't do all
that much to spice it up, but the strange, other-worldly atmosphere that
permeates a great many of de Leon's movies does elevate Mad Doctor
... somewhat above other mad doctor-movies.
While the gore effects in this one are actually quite expertly
handled, this doesn't go for the main monster, showing it clearly as a
man in a rubber mask, & even the rapid-fire zoom-in-zoom-out doesn't
help much to hide that fact !
Still, fun to watch ! |
