Aqua is sent back in time 100 years to, all Terminator-like,
kill Leon, whose invention to download human minds onto computers has
destroyed the future of mankind. But once she faces Leon, she can't bring
herself to shoot him point blank. Point is, Leon is by no means an evil
genius or a mad scientist or whatever, just an easy-going slacker with a
scientific streak. And the fact that he has invented a device to download
human minds onto computers is not to make humankind obsolete but to
prolong his own life - because he has learned he'll die from cancer in 30
days. So instead of killing Leon, Aqua befriends him and eventually the
two become lovers, much to the dismay of Luna, her boss from the future,
who's waiting desparately for history to change - and all Aqua can assure
her is that she'll try to convince Leon to not put his invention
into acting and destroy it instead. Thing is of course, despite all of
Aqua's stories and his affection to her, Leon is less than sure about
dying for the sake of mankind. Then though Luna sends another killer from
the future after Leon, XP 10-3, to pick up where Aqua has left off, and
now she sees herself defending the man she was told to kill. And when yet
another woman comes back from the future trying to convince Leon to
download his mind right then and there, the chaos is perfect ... Now
I have to admit, the first half of Leon Must Die is a bit too talky
for the movie's own good, but overall this is a pretty entertaining movie,
a sort of no budget philosophical version of The Terminator, but
the "philosophy" is delivered with the tongue firmly in cheek,
the movie's approach to science fiction is drenched in irony, and the
film's no budget approach to a very "big" story is really
endearing. And add to that a suitably subtle directorial effort and
likeable performers playing likeable characters, and you've got yourself a
pretty cool, and despite all Terminator-references rather
unusual movie.
