It's pretty much a typical night in the life of Lucy (Kelly Helen
Thompson), she leaves her boyfriend (Craig Deshner) who she's no longer
really in love with, to pick up night fares for Uber, and her fares are
pretty much everything you'd expect, only worse: There's hookers and
perverts, transvestites and transsexuals, drunks and dopeheads, crazies
who turn out to be surprisingly level-headed and "normals"
who're batshit crazy upon a second look, and of course the occasional
pregnant woman (Krystal Pixie Adams). There's the kind of priest (Bob
Glazier) who first invites her to dinner then wants to slize her up, the
couple (Jessica Reinmiller, Pete Girard) who's fight she has to break up
at gunpoint, and even a dead body in a port-a-loo. And it's all in a
night's work for this girl ...
Lefty Lucy is no narrative feature in the traditional
sense of the word as the film's entirely episodic, with only the fewest
episodes even been linked. That said, the film works just fine as the
separate stories all have anecdotal character and while they might differ
wildly in tone, this at the same time brings welcome variety to the movie
and really works on different levels of entertainment at the same time.
Plus, Kelly Helen Thompson as the not always super self-secure, sometimes
clumsy Lucy really manages to ground the film and really carries it, and
is supported by a colourful ensemble including many eccetnric of various
sorts. And the film's rather gritty looks work very well with the stories
told, many even grungier than they look. In all, a very nice and unusual
indie feature for sure.
