In the case of the disappearance of a writer (Annette Duffy), who has
of all things investigated the disappearance of a woman and murder of her
family, the FBI is getting exactly nowhere ... so agent Curtis (Jason
Rainwater) calls in Agatha (Kim Grimaldi), who has helped the bureau as a
consultant on several cases before, and who has a rather astonishing track
record, but whose methods are unorthodox, to say the least. So at first,
Curtis and Agatha are almost constantly at odds, also because she
constantly questions his deductions - and is right most of the time. Plus,
she is quick to connect the case in question to former cases she has
worked on, and while Curtis is desperate to pin the case on the most
obvious suspect, Daryl (John Kloppenborg), Agatha ties it to another case
of hers, the disappearance of Mary Shaw (Katie Goebel), and figures she
might be involved in the case unlike anyone has as of yet figured - but
the closer Agatha and Curtis get to the truth, the more it becomes
apparent they might have taken a bigger bite than they can swallow ... Kultus
is a really cool horror thriller/murder mystery, made like these movies
ought to be made: It's based on a solid script that is well-structured and
provides the audience with many a surprise along the way, and it's carried
by a very competent ensemble cast who also look their parts - even if that
means they are not all underwear models no older than 25 ... and the film
works all the better because of that. And add to that a directorial effort
that invariably supports the story rather than going for spectacle that
the film might suggest ... and you've got yourself a winner, really!
